Douglas Hayward, Mayfair Blazer – My Find of the Week

When one really covets a specific item of clothing, one can spend months, if not years waiting for the right piece to come along. In this case, that men’s staple, the ultimate classic: the navy blue blazer. And in my case, I wanted it double breasted – infinitely harder to get right!

Sometimes, despite best efforts, searching online and in stores for that right mix of price, fit, brand and – less tangible but most important – “feel”, it just isn’t happening.

Then one idle Saturday, browsing the rails, just when you’re convinced there’s nothing special to be found: there it is!

Well that was my experience at least when I happened across a brand I’d never heard of before, but oh my, what an incredible find. It was a Douglas Hayward of Mayfair (Pall Mall then Mount Street, where he was tailor to the glitterati of 70’s London). I tried it on and it just “felt” incredible. Casual frame, loose on the shoulders, and finely tapered round the waist – I didn’t think “off the shelf” could fit so well or look so good.

And fascinating to read about the man himself and how he built a successful tailoring brand away from Saville Row.
